200 Users | Multiple Schools & Churches across Australia
A local singing school based in Sydney commissioned me to build a app for them as they struggled to find a app that met their needs. They wanted an app that was:
✓ Affordable
✓ Assists students with voice preparation and development before performances
✓ Gamified practice time and sent reminders
✓ Allowed teachers to track student progress and follow up.
✓ Included pitch correction feedback to students
✓ Offered cooldown, harmonisation and personalised tutorials for students.

Observing the lessons
I attended multiple classes to observe the students and teachers.

Validation and Focus Group
I validated my assumptions by speaking to many of the teachers and student as well as conducting a anonymous survey.
From Students
Most student didn't practise outside of rehearsals
When surveyed, 83% of students reported they never did any additional vocal practises outside of the time they spent at the school. The students that did do practise reported less than 5 minutes a day was spent practising.
Students didn’t practice because they didn't know what to do.
Students often reported that they didn’t practice at home because they were unsure of what exercises to do and lacked the skills to play or accompany themselves on the piano..
50% students did not know their singing range type.
50% of the students were unsure if they were an alto, soprano, baritone, tenor, base or mezzo soprano.
Students had a variety of singing goals when compared with their peers
30% of students wanted to build range, others projection, others articulation and refinement of sound.
From Teachers
We compiled a short list of scales for warmups and cooldowns
(These exercises ranged between the most commonly used scales :
Five tone, Octave arpeggio, Octave arpeggio repeat, Octave and a half arpeggio, Broken arpeggio, Sustained octave repeater, One <–> three, One <–> Five, One -> Three, One One, Five -> One, Thirds’ Interval.
Teachers would adjust the singing range based on the group of individuals they were working with:
Base(E2-C4), Baritone (G2-E4), Tenor (B2-G4), Alto (F3-D5), Mezzo Soprano (A3-F5), Soprano (C4-A5).
The temp would also change based on the exercise being conducted anywhere between 35BPM to 250BPM.
Teachers found it difficult to motivate students to practise at home.
Teachers often had to remind students to practice daily, as progress was hard to achieve without consistency. Many reported that their students became discouraged when they didn’t see results.
Teachers would like to customise lessons based on student goals but didn't have the time.
Teachers had ideas on how to improve students through more refined lessons but didn’t have the time to spend with each student.
Teaching harmonies within the lesson time was sometimes challenging.
Students would often need reminding for previously taught harmonies, especially before a performane.
Teachers need to keep detailed notes on each student to report progress to parents.
Private teachers would often keep detailed notes on each student in a physical note pad.
We then ran a focus group/ brainstorm to generate ideas for the app. We then grouped the ideas into themes and colour coded them.

Business Structure & Feature prioritisation
We needed to validate the business structure and learn more about existing solutions so we could prioritise the features.

Low fidelity wireframes
Initial low fidelity sketches were drafted and then a focus group was conducted with key stakeholders to refine the functional scope, feature set and add any additional features.

Feedback

Designs development
As the wireframes progressed into mid- and high-fidelity designs, additional workshops were held to refine them. Key problem areas—specifically the scales and breathing tools—were identified and redesigned for better usability.

Final Design for development
High fidelity designs built for Beta test and overall rollout for product.
